The science behind the practice

Questions give attention somewhere to go.

Lofty is built on a modest, useful idea: what you repeatedly ask can influence what becomes salient, what you retrieve from memory, and what possibilities you consider. It is a practice—not a promise that thought alone changes reality.

Attention is selective

Your nervous system receives more information than conscious awareness can hold. Attention prioritizes some signals over others, influenced by both what stands out and what is relevant to your current goals. Researchers describe top-down attention as control that favors information useful for the task or goal at hand.

Where the reticular activating system fits

The brainstem reticular formation contributes to arousal and attention, which is why the “reticular activating system,” or RAS, is common shorthand in popular explanations. But it is not a single subconscious search engine. Human attention is distributed across brainstem, thalamic, frontal, parietal, sensory, and other networks. Lofty talks about attention rather than claiming one structure does all the work.

Questions can make an idea more salient

A question asks your mind to search: What evidence is here? What have I overlooked? What could I do next? That may increase awareness, make related memories and cues easier to retrieve, or create a moment of reflection before behavior.

What behavior research shows

Researchers call this family of findings the question–behavior effect: asking about a behavior can sometimes influence later behavior. A large updated review of randomized studies found a statistically significant but small overall effect, with substantial variation between studies and evidence of publication bias. That supports curiosity—not certainty.
